Back in October of 2007, I began hearing some rumors about the soil at
the Brass School Site being highly contaminated with toxic chemicals,
and that KUSD may be mishandling construction plans. I decided that
this issus was one I had to look into, and set about emailing just
about everyone I could to inquire about this. Of course, KUSD denied
that there was even a problem, as did their PAID consultants, who
insisted that they were following the remediation plans set forth by
the DNR. Well, I am no scientist, however, I can read, and it was
obvious to me, that this plan was not being followed, and that KUSD
provided me with little of the documentation I asked for, instead
passing me off to a series of "experts".

Due to the tragic death of my 17 year old son David last month and family and business obligations, I am unable to be in charge of rejuvinating the Kenosha Parents Union at this time. The KPU has been a strong interest of mine for quite some time, however, I believe it is in the best interest of my 2 surviving sons that I take no additional responsibility on right now I appreciate your understanding and support John and I both welcome other considerations and/or ideas in regards to the KPU. We can be contacted through the Daily Kenoshan, at www.dailykenoshan.com. Thank you all very much, Lisa Loring

I am so very pleased to announce that the Kenosha Parents Union (KPU) is now reorganizing and is once again an active group. Now that school is back in session, and parents and families are coming across issues they think need addressing, we are finding the need to have this valuable community resource available. This group is for all Kenoshans, parents or not. We are all tax payers, and are, therefore, owners of Kenosha Unified School District. We have the right and the responsibility to know what is going on in the District. With a group, this is possible.
Please be patient while we do some basic organizing and recruit members. We wish you would also help recruit members by telling your friends and families, and parents you see at your children's schools. This is YOUR group. We need members, ideas, and help. Please contact me anytime with comments, questions, suggestions, and so on. I would appreciate any feedback from YOU.
Welcome Back and Thanks to all of You!Â

What TEENSCREEN Doesn't Want You To See |

The Daily Kenoshan
March 4, 2006
In the interest of finding out what the heck was going on in our local school district
regarding the possible invasion of the child suicide screeners - TeenScreen, I submitted a public records request
to the Kenosha Unified School District. Joe Friday's "Just the facts, Ma'am" was the approach I wanted to take.
The public records showed that the school district social worker, Joe
Kucak, was working in lockstep with the
suicide screeners. The frantic Kucak, worked as if the local TeenScreen
battle had national significance, as if TeenScreen was fighting for its
last breath of air. Kenosha was the focus and Kucak was on stage. He
spent a still undetermined amount of time soliciting letters to support
the screeners, to little avail. Kucak worked like a pharmaceutical
sales
rep closing in on the last
Zyprexa sale of the month to ensure a bonus. Luckily
Kucak failed as
the school board told him "NO!" like a parent scolding a child who
stepped off the curb without looking both ways.
One of the public records I obtained, an e-mail,
originated from TeenScreen's NYC
headquarters. Christina Carro,
"Program Coordinator" had written to Kucak. That
particular e-mail had
an attachment entitled: "Responding to Critics of Mental Health
Screening". Ms. Carro instructed Kucak "We would recommend using this
document
as something for your own reference, but wouldn't recommend
distributing it to the
general group".
Therefore in the interest of truth, justice and the non-TeenScreen way, we are
distributing that document to the "general group" - the entire Internet!
You will find
it in its entirety below.

About SOS (Signs of Suicide) |

KPU News

Thursday, 22 February 2007 |
Signs of Suicide is a program not unlike the greatly protested TeenScreen program. Screening for Mental Health (SMH) has taken MILLIONS in pharmaceutical grants
to forward it's program of psychiatric testing in what they say is an
effort to reduce suicides, alcoholism, depression and eating
"disorders" in high schools, colleges, the workplace and the military.
Why would pharmaceutical companies want to support such an
organization? Are they altruistic—or do they simply stand to make
BILLIONS on the sale of drugs to the people who will be screened?
Read
over the list of questions on this Brief Screen for Adolescent
Depression created by the University of Columbia DISC Development Group
(the same group that supplies screening materials to TeenScreen). Do
you know any child who wouldn't answer YES to at least 2 or 3 of the
questions every once in a while? Does
this make them mentally unhealthy and in need of psychiatric treatment
and drugs, or is this just a normal part of growing up for most people?

NAMI URGING KUSD TO PUT TEEN SCREEN BACK ON AGENDA |

|
The following was given to me by Pam Stevens, VP of KUSD school board from the President of the local Nami chapter to the school board:
Hello Eric,
As a follow up to my email this morning, I would like to see
if it is
at all possible to reinstate the Columbia University TeenScreen
Program on the agenda for the School Board meeting scheduled for
February 27.
Marian Sheridan, the Health & Safety Coordinator for
the Fond du Lac
School system, is available to address the topic prior to
the
meeting. She was originally scheduled to attend the meeting. A mom
(RN) and her son (currently in college) were going to join her. The
TeenScreen program helped save her son's life. The Fond du Lac
school
system is quite successful and currently has the program
implemented in
seven (7) high schools, two (2) alternative high
schools, and is currently
incorporating it in three (3) middle schools.
Please let me know if there
are any questions.
Thank you,
Jack Rose
President

KENOSHA - It's official. The Kenoisha Unified School District has dropped plans for the implementation of the controversial mass mental health screening program, TeenScreen. In a short press release (seen here) signed by Dr. Scott Pierce, Superintendent of KUSD, and Joe Kucak, Coordinator of Student Support, the struggle between TeenScreen supporters and citizen opposition is over. The release cites "continuing controversy" related to TeenScreen as the reason for pulling the plug on the program. CONTINUING CONTROVERSY? Some of the controversy surrounding TeenScreen and it's proposed implementation here, includes lies, ommissions, and misinformation by the developers of the program, such as their claim to be an "evidence based" program despite the government's noted dropping of TeenScreen from its list of evidence based suicide prevention programs years ago. Other controversy includes questionable tactics, relationships and abuse of power by persons within the district in order to get TeenScreen rubber-stamped by the KUSD Board of Education without public participation or knowledge. Some of these tactics include conspiring to infiltrate and spy on the Kenosha Parents Union, discredit and besmirch the reputations of opponents of TeenScreen, and District officials conspiring to keep key facts from Board members who have been critical of the program. A recommendation to the Kenosha Unified School District Board of Education |

Our Schools

Sunday, 11 February 2007 |
|
In light of recent controversy regarding the KUSD's implementation of mass mental health screening of our children and the intense behind the scenes conspiracies, campaigns, investigations into private citizens, and attempts to discredit opposition to the TeenScreen program, we have the following recommendations to the board to enact as policy after all the legal dust from this nasty business settles. Any proposal, plan, or study which has an intended outcome that will include any form of mental or physical health practice or screening of KUSD students can only be considered when all board members are notified of every phase of the plan or proposal, from inception through adoption. That any proposal, plan, or study which has an intended outcome that will include any form of mental or physical health practice or screening of KUSD students must include equal time and consideration of public and internal opponents of said plan or proposal. That KUSD administrators be barred from using the offices and auspices of the district to conduct investigations of citizens without due process and court approval, and that they be barred from using the office and auspices of the KUSD to besmirch, defame, or vilify citizens who express their right within our democracy to oppose or support a program funded or implemented within the KUSD.
Anything else? Please comment with your thoughts.. This is a rough draft. Write Comment (1 Comments) |

Why Should I Join KPU?
|
If you are a parent in Kenosha, or if you are a member of the community... if your tax dollars go to our schools, or if you are concerned with the state of our children, then you can take it upon yourself to make your voice heard and go up against the big boards, administrations, schools, and police to urge action. You might succeed. Very many Kenosha parents, however, don't succeed and are faced with stonewalling, evasion, an endless loop of referrals to delegates, or just simply treated as a lone complainer.
One toothpick can easily be snapped in half, broken. Two or three, just as easily. Even ten can be. But hundreds of toothpicks together form a band, a block of wood that can't be broken. This is why the Kenosha Parents Union is important, and your participation counts.
